Alternators and Starter Motors

Further to my ealier posts. After removing and examining our starter motor I decided that a recon was necessary but was beyond my capabiities. Trawling the net I found this company - Electrostart - electrostar2006@googlemail.com - Carl Wise 07702 6632373 or Ray Wild 07724 136610. They normally trade on EBay but will deal direct for any starter or alternator. Anyway, as they are local to me (near Coventry) I visited their workshop to size them up before I bought. They are not cheap £288 for the Perkins starter motor however, I was very impressed with the attention they paid to the rebuilds. They replace all the windings, bearings, brushes etc so all they re-use is the shaft and case which they red lead inside before the re-build!. Comes with a 12 month warranty and they are obviously proud of what they do. While I was there they tested my alternator FOC and proved that it was ok and a 70A output unit. They identified my particular one as typically from an Ford Escort diesel van and supplied me with a reconditioned unit outright (no exchange)for £40, so I now carry a spare! All in all I would highly recommend Electrostart.

Just noticed a mistake in the email address for Electrostart. It should be - electrostart2006@googlemail.com - missed a T out!

Re: Alternators and Starter Motors

Update, just back from a glorious weekend aboard, mostly maintenance but lots of contemplation in the sun on Sunday. I finally got the new starter motor in. (It's a long story involving bilge pump plumbing and battery boxes that needed to be sorted first). Anyway, I can report that the recon starter motor from Electrostart is spot on. The perkins turns over much faster than before and fires on the button. As Deb would say - Happy Days!
