Windscreen Top Rail.

Does anyone now where i can source new aluminum top rail for the windscreen. or is my only option to have it welded. my existing one has been redrilled several times and is corroded and cracked through in several places. on removeing i will end up with at least 3 sections on the port side and probably on the starbord side. jim lloyd-davies.

Re: windscreen top rail.

Hi Jim,
I think this will become a problem for most owners sooner or later.
I too have been looking at sources of supply for a top rail with limited success particularly if its to be anodised.
The nearest I have come so far is specialist glazing suppliers, who do the glitzy screens and bathrooms.
But replicating the imperial sizes is not possible.
If you were in America it would be easy! however we are not.
I am therefore looking at how this can be got around, It would be very nice if we could manage without the through holes which make fitting very difficult, particularly when drilling the perspex.
The perspex could be bedded fully in mastic with appropriate spacers. The new section would have to be rolled to achieve the curve and a way of attaching the spray hood to the aluminium channel found .

Channel section is available but not 1"by 1/2". I will check the catalogue later today and confirm what sizes are available, the good new is they are anodised.

The bottom section is a bigger problem.
I will add to this later.
If anyone has suggestions for an elegant solution then I too would like to hear of it.
Regards
Philip

Re: windscreen top rail.

I had a similar problem in Dogboat. I remember at the time, I had a quote from a aluminium extrusion supplier, who would only make a minimum of, I think, six. I could not find five other seadogs requiring windscreens. The problem was solved by a shipwright at Dover Yacht Company who was able to shape teak ply to the correct radius and size, complete with studs for the sprayhood. The windscreen was supplied by the usual manufacturer in Otford, Sevenoaks. This was about 8 years ago, and the gentleman in question who was called Greg, has moved on to, I think, to a boatyard in Faversham. It has lasted very well and has proved excellent for the job. Whilst it would be beyond my abilities, I would think any competent shipwright would be capable of a similar outcome. I hope this helps.

Re: windscreen top rail.

Hi Chris,
The wooden version sounds like an option but if we could find the guy was prepared to make a minimum of 5 of them I am sure we would find some willing customers. You were probably ahead of the game with Dogboat because she was used so regularly and probably saw a lot more sea water than most SeaDogs. Many of us are reaching the desperate stage now.
I patched the windscreen on Dougal about 14 years ago but evn the repairs are now starting to dissolve.
At the right price you could put me down for one for starters. I had thought if I got another one made I might go a bit higher so that I would have more headroom under the sprayhood, not sure what others think?

Re: windscreen top rail.

I FEEL A MISSION COMMING ON. I THINK THAT MORE INTERESTED PARTIES MIGHT HELP. TO SUPPLY ONE IS NOT THE SAME AS 5 OR 6. I AM MEETING AN ENGIEERING FIRM WENSDAY. SHALL UPDATE FURTHER AFTER THAT.. JIM LLOYD-DAVIES.

Re: windscreen top rail.

Hi

I recall buying some special small batches from these people in the past

I suspect that you might need to use the metric sizes ask for U section channel 12.7 wide by 25.4mm high. they may have several choices of wall thickness. It would of course be supplied in flat lengths but it should be possible to DIY the bending and drilling.
