Steering Gear

Saluki was surveyed today and the surveyor found lost motion in the steering wheel about 60 degrees of wheel turn before the link arm in the engine space started turning!

Weird because I'm sure there wasn't a problem when the boat was last sailing in 2007.

I've not started to examine the mechanism inside the console yet - I've read that the gear is from the Jaguar Mk 10

Has anyone experienced similar lost motion?

Is it an adjustment to resolve?

Does anyone know whether Jaguar Mk 10 parts are available?

Most grateful for any advice available.

Re: Steering gear

Hi Jonothan,
I too have heard the 'mk 10 Jag' story and maybe it was true for the very early SeaDogs but I was assured by a chap from Whitlock at a boat show many years ago that the steering box was one of theirs.

If the problem does lie within the box I strongly suggest you have a word with Steve Woodland as I believe he has rebuilt the one on 'Glory'.

Re: Steering gear

Hi,
I recently rebuilt one too, not because of excess play but oil leaks.
The steering box operates on a worm and peg design and is quite robust, there is an adjuster on the top of the box which has a screw driver slot with a lock nut.
This adjustment is for small adjustment to make sure that the peg follows the worm without excessive slop.
A light touch is required in adjusting the amount of play, as the worm has probably developed more wear around the midships position that full lock.

From what you have said I would inspect the spline coupling at the output of the box or more likely the lower bearing coming adrift from the bearer or the lower coupling to the arm. Some of these were pinned and some are welded. You may have to remove to lower bearing to inspect this fully. I prefer the welded option.
If you wish to remove the box then;
Removal of the galley cupboard will give access to the four set screws that fix the box to the bulkhead. The steering box is double sided and if a pinta is fitted the drive chain is coupled to the inboard end behind the galley cupboard, this sprocket will require removal before the steering box can be withdrawn, the sprocket is fixed to the shaft with two grubscrews and a woodruff key. The grubscrews must be almost fully withdrawn before the sprocket can be removed.
Hope this is helpful.

Re: Steering gear

Thanks Graham and Phillip - helpful advice.

My local garage specialises in Jaguar restoration and looking at Jaguar steering gears this morning mine in Saluki definetly isn't from a Jaguar. It doesn't have an adjustment screw either. Pressure seems to be applied to the peg lug by the top cover plate which currently has 2 thin metal shim gaskets and one paper/card gasket. I assume you would take up play in the peg and worm gear by removing one metal shim gasket.

Thanks Phillip - as you suggested the play was between the key and the clamping block keyway on the output shaft - the worm and peg seem fine. I'm having new keys and a new clamping block made next week.

Would grease in the box rather than oil be OK? There doesn't seem to be any form of oil seal on the vertical output shaft - so presumably over time oil just leaks away as it lubricates that shaft.

I will try to post a couple of photos tomorrow.

I'm also now looking to replace the knuckle joints on the long steering linkage arm running through the engine space and aft cabin. There is a 2004 post suggesting Land Rover series 3 parts but a quick www search didn't reveal anything looking like the existing joints - so I'll be searching further tomorrow.

Re: Steering gear

I've also heard that the spherical joints were an Austin A40 item. Try one of the specialist distributors of such items with a sample or a drawing in your greasy hands!
