Can anyone advise? We recently suffered a steering failure! The flange connecting the main steering shaft to the steering box is secured by what appears to be a shear pin and the pin failed. (a tempory repair with a stainless steel bolt lasted 2 hours) A marine engineer suggests replacing the pin with a slot and key but this would be quite an undertaking and put the boat out of commission for the rest of the season; also there must be advantages in having a shear point in the system (provided it doesn't fail too easily). Has anyone any comments or similar experience? What sort of pin should I use and where may I get it?

I removed the gear from the box and had it braised to the wheel shaft.It cost me a tenner at Kirkwall, Orkney
