Stanchion top fittings

A Happy New Year to all and hopes for a better summer's sailing this year!

Has anyone replaced the stanchion top fittings? Tiwana is an early SeaDog (no.3) and the stanchions are straight pipes with a plastic insert for the top line. These plastic fittings have decayed and must be replaced. Since the lines are in reasonable condition we would like to find a way of holding down the top lines without having to cut/replace the eyes that form the end fittings. Any ideas?

Re: Stanchion top fittings

Hi John,
We did this on Dougal, actually in 2 stages. Initially we bought some cast stainless stanchion tops from somewhere in the USA, not certain which online shop it was sorry. These were held in place with a small grub screw. Unfortunately the hole for the wire to pass through was a bit abrasive so we later got our tame stainless steel guy to manufacture ferules for them. The ferules were sized so that the fittings for the wire would pass through (just).
Hope this helps, sorry a bit vague but we did this 8 or 9 years ago.
happy new year to you both
Graham

Re: Stanchion top fittings

Local to me is the Chandlery Barge, which deals primarily in second hand items, but they do have new. Some time ago I saw some of the plastic staunchion tops there. Roads permitting I could go and see whether they still have any on Saturday, if that is a help.

Hello John

John Lansdell is right the barge has a box of them as you go in they were on the right hand side, that was about a month ago.
I got some for Pavonia and they fitted a treat.
Best Wishes
Ian

Hi,

I have been trying to source a couple of these locally but no one seems to stock them. Where abouts is the barge located?

Mark - finding "the barge" -

Though not a local, I've used this 'treasure trove' over the years and it is well worth a visit. An old concrete barge (1940s ??), it is moored on the west bank of the Hamble, just north of the A 27 bridge over the river. So, from the A 27 you want the turning north just at the "Southampton end" of the bridge; just opposite Aladdin's Cave chandlery, if I remember right. A bit of exploring needed when you get there - 150 yds. - but good fun!

Many thanks for the help from Graham, John and Ian - I've emailed John so hope there may still be some tops at the barge!!

Re: Stanchion top fittings

I've got a set of 8 for John Poxon today @ £1 each, and there were still some left. If anyone else needs some, please let me know how many, and I'll go on another expedition to the farthest, darkest, reaches of the the Hamble for you! They are to the original pattern, so the end fittings should go through the seven sixteenths/11mm hole.

Re: Stanchion top fittings

Hi,

I need a couple, but don't make a special trip on my account as I will at some stage be going down that way, some time in the next couple of months.

Re: Stanchion top fittings

Bad News!

Went to the Chandlery Barge yesterday to get a set of Staunchion Tops for a member, and found the price has gone up to £2 each. It seems there has been a run on them recently, so if you are likely to need some soom act quickly. I know the proprietor looked into having some more made, but the cost of tooling up for such a run was prohibitive.
