4.107/4.108 engine cooling

Hi All
I have been studying the 107&108 workshop manual and it states that there is 2 types of cooling =,the direct(raw water),and indirect(heat exchanger),i have recently run the 107 on "kushka"(raw water),it has been lying unused for about a year,it took an hour to get it up and running it was rotten with air,however it ran as sweet as a nut,hope this sheds some light on reccent cooling discussions.Kind Regards.
