Gearbox rattle
Anybody any thoughts on why my Velvet Drive gearbox rattles at low revs when in gear (forward or astern)?

Re: Gearbox rattle
Hi Mike,
Dougal has had this problem for about 10 years now and it was only when I had the engine serviced recently and the mechanic mentioned it that I gave it any real thought. He described is as sounding like ' a bag of spanners'.
It used to go quiet as soon as revs were increased from tickover but these days it dissapears/is drowned out only at about 2000 rpm!
I plan to follow his advice and have the box refurbished before next season.
regards

Re: Re: Gearbox rattle
Hi Graham
There is probably nothing wrong with the gearbox. The rattle comes from the drive plate and is caused by either broken or worn springs. A better type of drive plate is available. The trouble is that the engine has to come out to replace it.
Will talk to you about it at the Elstead.

Re: Re: Re: Gearbox rattle
Hi Eric,
I have the same rattle in my gearbox.
After renewing the driveplate the rattle whas stil there.
It is there for many years now and according some specialists it is no problem.
By the way, it is possible to renew the driveplate without getting the engine out.
It is not easy but it can be done (I did it).
