EMRA Northney Marina to Faversham

Sailing from Northney Marina to Faversham Creek North Kent

Having recently bought EMRA, it is now time to sail her up the Channel to her permanent mooring in Faversham Creek. Our best opportunity with tides and winds is to start on Monday 2nd April when there will be some reasonable SW winds, will probably have to motor sail part of the way as if we moor at Eastbourne Marina on Monday night, the forecaast is for the winds to back to NE on the Tuesday if we want to get to Ramsgate on Tuesday night, and tackle the Forelands by Wednesday and then down to Faversham Creek.
Has anybody sailed this route under these projected winds, and how close have you sailed to the wind? They are projected 6- 8 mph. Any suggestions?

I used to keep Dogboat at Dover so have experienced the passage (and conditions) you expect.

You are likely be motor sailing from Eastbourne, the light winds and neap tides should make for a reasonably easy passage. However expect the wind to increase a Beaufort force in the Dover straight. It could be lumpy past Dungeness (being here at high water would help) , and South Foreland. Plan to be at the North Foreland at about an hour or so after the start of the south going tide to get the best of the tide along the Kentish Coast arriving at Faversham at high water. (It will also make rounding the Foreland more comfortable!) You might consider stopping overnight at Dover rather than Ramsgate. On the other hand you could do the Eastbourne to Dover / Ramsgate leg overnight, to avoid the worst of the head wind. You have just the right boat for this sort of trip! I hope this helps

If you are stopping at Eastbourne Marina, just a word of caution the channel marker buoys were scheduled to be removed on the 26th March to facilitate dredging which is due to exend well into April - details on their web site.
If you stop instead at Brighton you can catch two favourable tides to carry you on to Dover
Have a pleasant trip

Thanks for advise, we had to change our plans, as I needed to replace the engine battery, as the original had lost one cell....Perkins fires up fine now. We now plan to leave Sparkes Marina on Saturday 7th April about 6.00 am to take advantage of the tidal currents around Selsey Bill and up the Channel to maybe Brighton Marina, or maybe Eastbourne marina? by the evening. Winds for most of the day are WNW to N until 16.00 hrs then back to NNE. Sunday winds all day SW & W avg 6mp...Should we aim for Dover or Ramsgate on the Sunday night, as on Monday winds are still W, and of course by then we will be heading on a westerly course up the Thames Est.
