Next Question

Looking in the engine bay of Hound Dog the hydraulic pipes from the Gerabox to the cooler are looking past there best so looking to replace.

The pipes are part flexible and part copper (Brake) pipe. Do I have to replace like for like or can I just replace with flexible pipe all the way?

Ps The copper pipe has probably been stood on and bent then straightened that many times that it as in crease in the pipe, hence my thoughts of replacing.

Hi John

These pipes should be flexible throughout their length.
The best way to get replacements in good quality materials is to take them along with a length measurment to a local depot that specialises in hydraulic hose repairs. they will make you two new pipes up at the best cost in suitable materials. They need to be wire braided hose and will come with new end fittings properly crimped on. Better to make them slightly long then they will not be damaged if stepped on.

And there is more questions

It at as been put to me that the reason for the copper (brake) pipe is to control the flow of oil, is this a concern?

Do I need to worry about creating air locks in the sysyem when I change the pipes?

Any suggestions on the best hydraulic fluid to use?

Each step is another milestone to putting hound dog back on the water soon.

The copper brake pipe should not be there, if Borg warner had wished to restrict the flow they would have done this by fitting a pre drilled orifice nipple in the gearbox outlet fitting.
The oil used should be that used in vehicle automatic transmissions. I used Castrol TQF. This has good anti foam addatives and will stand the high temperatures generated at the clutch faces when taking up drive.

Sorry I forgot about your question re air lock. No reason to worry its a pumped system and circulates continuously. Its a lovely bit of kit and very easy to understand if ever you strip one down, they are very much over engineered for the job in hand.
