Aft Bulkhead Problems

Water rotting aft cabin bulkhead, Mizzen Tabernacle security.

Hi Duncan

Two problems in this area were found when we first got Taliesin. The most serious was that the galvanized bolts holding the mizzen tabernacle in place were very badly corroded, indeed one was in two pieces. There seemed to have been a reaction between the wood and the galvanizing.
The problem with water getting in was found to be from the short pieces of copper pipe which should drain the water from the hatch slide channels through into the cockpit. They were a poor fit and allowed most of the water to go flow outside the tube and behind the ply bulkhead causing rot in the plywood and the door frame timbers.
We cured it by glassing it solid, repairing/replacing wood work then redrilling and bonding new tubes in with resin so that the water could not get behind the bulkhead.
