Frame sprayhood / cockpit window

Unfortunately Bizzie Lizzie has been almost unused for six years. This means that we'll have a lot of work ahead of us if we want to bring her back to sailing in 2012.

One strange thing is that, somehow, we have lost (!) the frame of the sprayhood.... The sprayhood cover is still with us, fortunately.

Does any of you have a drawing of the sprayhood? Or have all sprayhoods been modified in the last 40 years?

Also: Roel fitted the cockpit with plexyglass windows some 7 years ago. As it turns out this material tends to crack and turn milky. Can you advise me on which material to use to replace these windows? I was thinking of polycarbonate, but perhaps one of you has had to replace the windows some while ago.

Thanks for your replies.

Unfortunately, so far as I know, there are no drawings of the cockpit frame. The only thing I can suggest is that you use a length of copper pipe as a pattern, if you can get someone to make it from that. You may well have to make the end fittings to suit, but I would talk to someone who works in the business about that.

As regards the windscreen, the best material is acrylic (plexiglass), BUT, when not in use make up a cover for it to protect it from sunlight. I'll send you a picture of ours.

Thanks, John.

I'll look into these covers.

I understand that drawings of the frame are unavailable or hard to come by, but could you at least tell me what the size of the frame tubes is? Our measurements came to half an inch, but everybode I spoke to talks about approximately an entire inch.

I hope to get on to Twotails tomorrow. If so I'll measure our tube sizes. Unfortunately you now benefit from having had Napoleon change all the ways you measure things, so ours may be in Imperial Measure (inches!), rather than that which you are used to! (Just joking. I suspect ours are in a metric size too!)

Just to say that the end fittings are nowadays available off the shelf (or at least off the Internet)....."Bimini" is a useful Google term.

I think by now all with have been modified - and I suspect that if a sprayhood was fitted at the factory (or only an option?) that the design would also have changed over the years.

Anyway, I was down my boat yesterday and remembered this thread........

The main arch of my sprayhood is 3/4" stainless steel.....and approx 140" long (their is alao a shorter arch of approx 120").

In addition I was on my Father's 33 foot / 10 Metre Motor boat and was looking at his aft cockpit canopy - the frame is made of 3/4" Aluminium tube. If it is original then now over 30 years old, if not then at least 16 years old........obviously not so strong as s/s, but on either the weak point is likely the cover itself..........I mention the aluminium as would be easy to bend DIY (although might need to use a spring so you get a bend, not a fold!) and cheaper.......even if you only use as a temporary fix (for a few years? ) - strength wise I wouldn't attached my harness to it, but I would not do that with the s/s version anyway.

Just an idea.
