Shaft Bearing

Just about to order a new cutlas bearing. I've had the vernier on the shaft and tail of the existing bearing and make it 1.25" shaft and 1.75" OD bearing, can anyone confirm this? I'm also assuming that the brass / nitrile rubber bearings as fitted originally are the best bet. ASAP also stock a Phenolic bearing but it means not a lot to me!

Re: Shaft Bearing

Hi

We have the original Perkins / Velvet Drive system and can confirm that the shaft was 1.25 in O/D and the cutlass was 1.75 in OD

We also used the brass type.

I heard many stories about how difficult it was to remove the old bearing but possibly because the hull had just been sand blasted the old bearing pulled out with pliers !

Good Luck

Re: Shaft Bearing

Many thanks. Our existing bearing has a 30mm tail sticking out the back so I can get a wrench on it, fingers crossed.

Re: Shaft Bearing

Hi Alan & Debbie

Yep you are right with the sizes, I should definately go with the Bronze version. I have heard of the plastic ones breaking when trying to remove same.
I cut mine down so that I had 1/2" protruding, this left enough to wind them out with Stillsons once the pinch bolt was slackened and just enough clearence to fit an Ambassador Marine Stripper without blocking the water from exiting the Cutlas Bearing.
I have exactly the same set up on Easy Go.
I prefer the Stripper to Spurs as the Stripper has a stronger root and the Spurs is a hardened S Steel which soon breaks if faced with hard work. The circular blade type are nearly useless.

Thanks. Hope you are well. I am planning to fit the ambassador cutter. Question though. how far in does the bearing go? All will be revealed when I strip it out but I'm assuming that it stops short of the inlets through the side of bearing housing so that water can pass through.

Re: Shaft Bearing

Hi Allan,
Dougal also has the Ambassador Stripper fitted. To get enough space (we also have a feathering propeller) we machined the bearing down so that it only just protrudes from the fitting.
The bearing does extend beyond the water intakes, the bearing should be drilled through the water intakes before the shaft is refitted.

many thanks, that makes sense. We have 10 days of maintenance over Easter having been held up by the awful weather. I'll let you know how we get on.

Re: Shaft Bearing

Looks like I'm going to have to do the same job in mid April.

Gael Force Marine seem to do a 1.25" x 1.75" x 5" for £38.34 + VAT

I'd like to know whether you found a better "best buy" for the new bearing and how long the job takes because I'm trying to timetable several jobs and it would be really useful to have an idea of how long it's likely to take me to do that particular job.

Re: Shaft Bearing

ASAP supplies on http://www.asap-supplies.com/ do a 1.25 x1.75 x 5 for £25.53 plus VAT and carriage on line price. I will be replacing the bearing on Star Dog over Easter. We'll have the laptop with us so I'll post a message ref the timescale as soon as it is done. Hopefully it won't contain too many expletives!

Re: Shaft Bearing

If you do have a problem in removing the cutless bearing, and it projects around an inch, as most do, then you can drill a couple of holes across the protruding part to take a substantial bolt or screwdriver. This gives you something substantial to get some welly on to aid it out!
