Just been looking through my Seadog paperwork and found the original price list. £9600 was the basic price before extras - albeit these were extras rather than essential basics!
Running that figure through www.measuringworth.com they come up with the following figures:-
Current data is only available till 2008. In 2008, £9,600.00 from 1971 was worth:
£101,684.92 using the retail price index
£100,016.11 using the GDP deflator
£180,628.94 using the average earnings
£218,999.60 using the per capita GDP
£240,194.93 using the share of GDP
Reading through the notes would appear that average earnings is the closest indicator of affordability........the rough figures I have come up with is £1000pa for 1971 and £23k for 2008.
So, in 1971 a Seadog was around 9 times the annual average wage. The modern day equivalent multiplier would be a £200k vessel. And for a 30 footer that would also be a nice one
Of course older folks woild know all that already, but for younger owners (I was barely on pocket money back then ) thought might be of interest...........
