Magnetic Bilge Trawl

Magnetic bilge trawl

I read a post recently about spanners in the bilges - I recently dropped the alternator strut while changing the belt! Anyway I lashed up a 3ft stick with a very strong magnet attached to the end and went trawling through the goo in the bilges. Its surprisingly far down but I got the strut back first try and with a chandlery-full of assorted nuts and washers too!

I don't think it works on stainless steel though.

If you are lucky ,as I was, lost bits will end up in the hand bilge pump and the go over the side. I discovered this when the pump jammed and I found a small spanner in it.
