Engine Battery on EMRA

At the start of the season I managed to dislocate the propellor shaft out of the coupling, which connects with the gear box..It looked like the key had fallen out of the shaft, and the internal lock nut, which locks it in to the coupling had come undone...Figured that out by noticing the engine was turning, but the shaft as observed from rear cabin was stationary..It required the boat to be dry docked, the packing gland to be loosened, the coupling taken off by the 4 x 9/16'' retaining bolts, the shaft pushed back into the housing, lock nut sealed onto end of prop shaft, and all put back...There was one small complication, the engine battery was located directly above the gear box, coupling, and end of prop shaft...I have often thought it is not a good position for engine battery...It had to come out to work on coupling,, and have now relocated it in starboard locker, with domestic battery..have any other SEADOG OWNERS experienced this problem.?..Coupling is now fixed, but will have to re wire the starter motor circuit, as the previous heavy duty battery cables are now too short to reach the locker....Any suggestions on that one...The wiring on EMRA is just a complete puzzle, as over the years, additions have been made to both starter motor circuit and domestic circuit...and nobody has bothered over 40 years to make up to date circuit diagrams..

Dear Roger and Jennie,

Yes - heads door is still an concern and I need to understand where I am regarding rig tension - any recommendation? What does yours deflect? I suspect I might be in the business of doing the same thing.
BD has a slightly different layout to some of the earlier boats which does I think support the mast quite well, but it is still a bit of an issue and it might be about angles; any chance you could send me some photos of your compression post? I've had a rigger look over the rig recently and I suspect he tightened it all up a bit which I might need to now undo! The mast is rod-straight at least so no mast bend that I can tell.

Planning on being in the Dart a bit over the summer so perhaps see you there, unless you get round to Guz.

Best wishes,

Marcus

Mizzen tabernacle

Hi Martin. Sorry for my lack of response but this is the first time I've logged in for months! Yes, I had a bit of bulkhead rot too but in the end decided to pay the £95 to drop the mizzen (and £95 to put it back up again) and put a whole new tabernacle on in one go. As you can see I didn't get much interest in my predicament from members and didn't want to go and do anything foolish - so went for the safest option instead. My tabernacle was too far gone for extra bolts though that seems like a good idea if things on your boat aren't so bad. I hope you managed it all OK and had a good summer's sail. Thanks and best wishes. Lewis

Hi Mark,

I'd upload the photo to google photos or similar (or if you can host on your own web-server if practical) then reference the image with a tag. If you click on the "img tag: on" link below the message editing box here it gives a short explanation.

The problem with a google image is that it gives a very long url (address, it stands for 'uniform resource locator'). To get the url open an image by clicking on it then right click and select 'Copy Image address' - that is what you want, just the image not all the clever stuff google wraps it in.

If you want for convenience to shorten the URL you can use a service like http://bit.ly which can shorten it for you. (eg, the long link for this picture becomes: http://bit.ly/2wVBrgb

Hope that help - not entirely simple but it does work. If you press 'preview' the system will load your message and you can check it all works before you post - I look forward to the pics!

Aye,

Marcus (Black Dog)

Hi,

Does anyone know the specification / make model (and specifically operating frequency) of the originally fitted depth sounder likely to have been put on SD41 when built in 1968? Black Dog still has the transducer (very well) fitted into the hull, but the rest has been removed; there are devices out there that can use existing transducers on a range of frequencies. The transducer seems to be in great nick and is electrically intact so I'm keen to use if I can rather than make a mess pulling it out and replacing.

Thanks,

Marcus

Hi All,

Thanks to Peter's excellent article and with the help of Mylor in Falmouth Black Dog now has a similar Raymarine power ram steering system. It works very well indeed, although Mylor had to come back and re-work some of the fitting. Black Dog now in Bristol and will be in Plymouth from August if anyone wants to have a look - although I think Peter's installation in DOGMATIC is probably neater.

Next project is to move the log (a NASA clipper badly fitted on the pedestal) and extract NMEA speed information from the log and integrate, alongside (probably) a Clipper Battery Management device.

Time for a summer of sea trials!

Blocked Filters on EMRA

On a recent cruise to Chatham Marina, the Perkins 108 suddenly stopped on EMRA just as I was approaching the Lock gates...Will spare you all the adventures I had in securing the boat, but next day, moored on a pontoon close to the entrance to Chatham Marina...which in hindsight, I would advise any visitors not to use....The engine failure was found to be blocked filters, both primary and secondary...The Secondary Filter close to the lift pump is easy to replace, after aligning the top piece with O-ring onto the filter housing....But....the primary water-separator, is virtually impossible to put back together, after cleaning..Its position located on the cabin bulkhead and really low in the engine compartment, ensures that only a trained midget, or some pet monkey could ever relocate the retaining screw back into the filter housing...After I had dropped that particular screw into the bilges, it was just a question of by- passing it with a flexible hose, direct from tank into secondary filter, bleeding the injectors, and getting the PERKINS working again...I have now purchased an ADELPHI FILTER, and will relocate it , where I can change filter, and put it all back together again, without the aid of some monkey or midget...Has any other SEADOG OWNER, experienced similar problems with the primary filter, and relocated it to a more easy to get at position..?
